Emergency Excersise to be Held at DBIA
You may see some unusual activity at the Daytona Beach International Airport on Tuesday.
It’s nothing more that a disaster response readiness during a full – scale emergency response exercise starting at 9 AM.
Volusia County spokesperson Michelle Coates says the exercise is part of a triennial requirement of the Federal Aviation Administration that tests the airport’s emergency response capability.
The exercise will bring together multiple first responders to include federal, state and local law enforcement, fire agencies and EVAC ambulance.
In addition, the Daytona Beach Fire Department will respond.
There are more than 130 participants in this drill.
A plane fuselage will be pre-staged on airport property.
More than 60 volunteers will play “victims”.
They are volunteers from Daytona State College nursing program and Embry – Riddle Aeronautical University.
Emergency responders will begin staging around 8 AM at the backside of Daytona International Speedway.
During the exercise, traffic on Midway Avenue, Richard Petty Boulevard and Coral Sea Avenue may be interrupted temporarily to allow ingress and egress of emergency vehicles.
People who live or work near the airport may hear emergency vehicle sirens and see smoke the day of the exercise.
They also may see law enforcement and fire rescue activity in the area.
Daytona Beach International Airport will be open for business as usual during the exercise.
