Emergency Excersise to be Held at DBIA

gfx_dbiaYou may see some unusual activity at the Daytona Beach International Airport on Tuesday.

It’s nothing more that a disaster response readiness during a full – scale emergency response exercise starting at 9 AM.

Volusia County spokesperson Michelle Coates says the exercise is part of a triennial requirement of the Federal Aviation Administration that tests the airport’s emergency response capability.

The exercise will bring together multiple first responders to include federal, state and local law enforcement, fire agencies and EVAC ambulance.

In addition, the Daytona Beach Fire Department will respond.

There are more than 130 participants in this drill.

A plane fuselage will be pre-staged on airport property.

More than 60 volunteers will play “victims”.

They are volunteers from Daytona State College nursing program and Embry – Riddle Aeronautical University.

Emergency responders will begin staging around 8 AM at the backside of Daytona International Speedway.

During the exercise, traffic on Midway Avenue, Richard Petty Boulevard and Coral Sea Avenue may be interrupted temporarily to allow ingress and egress of emergency vehicles.

People who live or work near the airport may hear emergency vehicle sirens and see smoke the day of the exercise.

They also may see law enforcement and fire rescue activity in the area.

Daytona Beach International Airport will be open for business as usual during the exercise.

 

Condemned House Destroyed by Fire

gfx_fire investigation2Daytona Beach Firefighters were busy early Monday morning as they battled a structure fire in the 14 – hundred block of Grandview Avenue.

Fire Department spokesman Lt. Larry Stoney said the first unit on the scene were met with heavy smoke and flames coming through the roof of the 3-story structure on the east side of the building.

Personnel from three engine companies, two rescue squads and a tower truck were able to bring the fire under control within eighteen minutes of their arrival.

Once the structure fire was under control and deemed safe for entry, several crews entered the structure to conduct a search for potential victims and to extinguish hot spots.

Fire crews were able to confine the fire to its building of origin, with minimum damage to the blinds of the structure just north of the fire.

Initial reports state the property was condemned by the city of Daytona Beach in the month of September of 2009.

Property is valued at 170,000.

The State Fire Marshall along with investigators with the Daytona Beach Police Department are trying to figure out how the fire started.

No one was injured.

 

North Brevard Firefighters Battle Brush Fire

gfx_brush fireInvestigators will spend Monday trying to figure out how a 20 acre brush fire got started north of Mims, in Brevard County, Sunday afternoon.

Brevard County Fire – Rescue relied on mutual aid from the Kennedy Space Center and Volusia County to help squelch the flames fanned by 30 mile an hour wind.

No outbuildings or homes were lost… but the flames did burn within a couple of dozen feet of several homes.

Three houses were evacuated.

The smoke became so thick at one point… the Florida Highway Patrol shut down a portion of U.S. 1 from Aurantia Road to Golden Shores Boulevard.

Early Sunday evening, firefighters were called to a quarter – acre brush fire on U.S. 1 and Parrish Road.

That fire was knocked down in short order.
